Thomas Gilbert Sr., a millionaire hedge fund founder from
Manhattan, was discovered dead in his apartment on Sunday after allegedly being
shot in the head by his son over a monetary dispute.
A source said that the elder Gilbert "had been giving [his
son] $2,400 a month for rent and $600 for spending money, and he was cutting
that to $400 a month for spending money."
30-year-old Gilbert Jr. arrived at the Beekman Place apartment on
Sunday and allegedly ordered his mother, Shelly, to leave the building to get
him a sandwich. When she returned, she discovered her husband's body with a
handgun nearby.
"My husband's been shot by my son!" she told a 911
dispatcher.
Gilbert Sr., 70, founded Wainscott Capital Partners in 2011. The
fund has an estimated $200 million in assets.
The suspect, a graduate of Princeton University, fled the scene
and was taken into custody by police on Sunday night.
