Ben Carson Knocks Donald Trump From Top Spot

For the first time in months, a national poll shows Donald Trump is not leading the Republican 2016 primary race, and instead has Ben Carson in first place.

Carson won the support of 26% of Republican primary voters, compared to 22% who are backing Trump, according to CBS News/New York Times. Though within the poll's margin of error, it marks the first time since the billionaire businessman's dominant rise over the summer where he has been bumped from the top spot nationally.

The new numbers also represent a reversal from the last CBS/New York Times poll, taken more than a month ago, which saw Trump leading Carson 27%-23%.

Carson and Trump have been running consistently neck-and-neck since the start of September -- with other candidates struggling to keep pace.

MTN NIGERIA HIT WITH N1.04 TRILLION FINE

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a landmark fine of N1.04 trillion ($5.2bn) against MTN Nigeria, the largest mobile network operator in the country for failing to disconnect subscribers with unregistered and incomplete subscriber identification modules (SIM) cards within the stipulated time.

The fine which is the largest in the history of telecom infringements may redefine the relationships between telecommunications operators and the regulator. Technology Times which broke the story last night said NCC fined MTN Nigeria “for allegedly undermining efforts by the Nigerian government to tackle security challenges and the war on terror and allied crimes, as the telecoms operator has allegedly refused to deactivate unregistered mobile phone lines on its network”.

A top official of MTN Nigeria who is not authorised to speak on the matter however confirmed to that NCC truly issued the fine against MTN Nigeria. The official said “This fine is unprecedented in the history of Nigeria. The amount is even bigger than the entire budget of the Federal Government of Nigeria. It is enough to make the operator close its operations in the country.” He said.

CBN Fines FirstBank, UBA N4.82bn for Concealing NNPC Funds

  

In line with its threat to sanction commercial banks that failed to comply with the federal government’s directive on the remittance of government revenue to the treasury single account (TSA), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) last Friday fined First Bank of Nigeria Limited (FirstBank) and United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc the sum of N4.819 billion.

According to a circular obtained from banking industry sources, while the CBN imposed a penalty of N1,877,409,905.12 on FirstBank, UBA was fined N2,942,189,651.45 for its failure to comply with the federal government’s policy.

An industry source explained that FirstBank concealed N37,548,198,102.41 belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s (NNPC) instead of remitting it to the TSA as directed.

On the other hand, UBA concealed N58,843,793,029.05 of NNPC funds, which attracted the penalty.

NYPD Officer Shot In Head, Dies

A police officer has died after being shot in the head while responding to a report of a man armed with a gun in Manhattan.

The officer, named by the New York police department as Randolph Holder, was fatally shot in east Harlem on Tuesday evening.

The African terminal received the unfortunate distinction of being named "world's worst airport" in 2015 by travel website The Guide to Sleeping in Airports.

This year's survey, which asked fliers to identify the world's worst and best aviation terminals, attracted 26,297 qualifying responses.

Despite the site's name, airports weren't just rated according to how easy it is to take a nap while inside them.

Sleeping in Airports' readers were asked to judge facilities in four categories: comfort, conveniences, cleanliness and customer service.

What landed Port Harcourt at the top of the pile?

Respondents reportedly complained about unpleasant and unhelpful staff, alleged corruption, a severe lack of seating, broken air-conditioning and the fact that the arrivals hall was inside a tent.

"The good news is that some areas of the terminal have been recently renovated, meaning you can expect actual walls, floors and windows," says the website.

"Though it is a far cry from reasonable, improvements are being made."

Lamar Odom, Ex-NBA Player & Reality TV Star, Found Unconscious At Brothel

Former NBA star Lamar Odom, who won two championships and later married reality TV star Khloe Kardashian, is hospitalized after being found unconscious at a brothel in Nevada.

Odom was found unresponsive Tuesday at the Love Ranch in Crystal, the Nye County Sheriff's Office said.

"He doesn't look good," brothel owner Dennis Hof said. "He doesn't look like he'll make it, and if he does, he won't be the same."

Officials haven't said what was wrong with Odom, and his condition remains unclear.

Authorities originally planned to fly him to a hospital, but said the 6-foot-10 Odom was too tall to fit in a helicopter. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Las Vegas -- about 60 miles away.

Diezani Cries Out: I Am Suffering From Breast Cancer

Diezani Alison-Madueke is receiving treatment for cancer in the United Kingdom, the former minister of Petroleum Resources has cried out through her lawyer in London.

Her lawyer, Mr. Oscar Onwudiwe said in a statement to Sahara Reporters that the former Minister, who was arrested on corruption-related offences, began treatment for cancer in the UK while she was in office.

Although he did not say what form of cancer she was diagnosed with, he added, “The health crisis has unfortunately exacerbated in recent times.”

Drug Baron Senator Buruji Kashamu Election Nullifies

The National and state Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital has cancelled the election of a Buruji Kasahamu, a Nigerian senator wanted by the US for drug-related offenses.

The Election Tribunal in Ogun State has nullified the election of alleged US wanted drug baron, Buruji Kashamu.

The tribunal made the decision today in Abeokuta and ordered a rerun.

Prince Dapo Abiodun, the All Progressives Congress, APC Ogun East Senatorial candidate in the March 28 Presidential and National Assembly Election challenged Kashamu’s victory at the tribunal, claiming that Kashamu was not validly elected.

Instead, Abiodun wanted the tribunal to declare him the winner.

At the hearing on 3 August, all the counsels in the matter adopted their final addresses and made final submission to further convince the court on their cases.

Breaking News: Former Bayelsa Governor, Alamieyeseigha, Is Dead

The first executive Governor of Bayelsa State,Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha is dead.

Alameiseigha reportedly died after he was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) in Rivers State.

Family sources claimed that the former governor  suddenly fell ill in his hometown in Ammassoma township of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa and was rushed to Port Harcourt.

20 Confirmed Dead In Abuja Twin Bomb Blast

20 people have now been confirmed dead in the twin bomb blast that happened in Kuje and Nyanya areas in Abuja yesterday October 2nd. According to a senior official at the Ministry of Health, Opada Bamali, 15 of the deceased died in the Kuje attack while 5 died in the Nyanya attack. Of the 41 injured, 24 are currently receiving medical attention in various hospitals while the others have been discharged as they sustained only minor injuries.

Ex-Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, Arrested In London

The immediate past Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, was on Friday arrested in London, PREMIUM TIMES can exclusively and authoritatively report.

The former minister, who was one of the most powerful officials of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration, was arrested Friday morning by the UK National Crimes Agency, alongside four other people.

The identities of the four other people arrested along with her could not be immediately ascertained.

PREMIUM TIMES learnt she was arrested for offences related to bribery, corruption and money laundering.

Two top British officials in London confirmed the development to this newspaper. They requested not to be named because they had no permission to speak on the issue.

When contacted, the British High Commission in Nigeria confirmed that some arrests were made Friday but declined to disclose the identities of those involved.

Joseph Abuku, Press and Public Affairs Officer, said, “This morning, five people between the ages of 21 and 60 were arrested on suspicion of bribery and corruption offences. The crimes are being investigated by the National Crimes Agency.

Oregon College Shooting: Gunman Kills Nine In Roseburg Attack

A gunman opened fire inside a classroom at a rural Oregon community college Thursday, killing at least nine people before dying in a shootout with police, authorities said. One survivor said he demanded his victims state their religion before he started shooting.

The attack shattered the first week of classes at Umpqua Community College in the small timber town of Roseburg, about 180 miles south of Portland.

The killer was identified as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer, according to a government official who was not authorized to speak publicly and provided the name on condition of anonymity. Authorities shed no light on his motive and said they were investigating.
