Police detectives attached to
the Ilupeju Police Station in Lagos have arrested the leader of an armed
robbery gang which allegedly specialised in attacking bullion vans. The sum of
$118,000 and £50,000 were allegedly recovered from the suspect's hideout at
Mushin area of Lagos.
The suspect, Bolaji Oyekanmi
was arrested after his gang had successfully robbed a bullion van that was
carrying cash and was in transit to an unnamed bank.
A source at the command
headquarters, Ikeja, told Daily Trust that after his arrest by the police team
led by the Ilupeju Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Olayinka Egbeyemi, the
suspect led the police to the home of a native doctor at Mushin, where the
money was allegedly hidden.
It was gathered that the
recovered money belongs to the Bankers Warehouse. The police source said the
recovered money had since been handed over to the owners by the DPO on the
order of the Commissioner of Police (CP) Fatai Owoseni.
The exemplary conduct of the
DPO, Egbeyemi, was commended by the Bankers Warehouse management who told
Journalists that the DPO and his team did not remove a ‘pin’ from the amount
recovered.
CP Owoseni who confirmed the
arrest, noted that investigation was still ongoing, adding that the suspect,
who is still in police custody, would soon be charged to court.
