Google has reportedly signed a deal with the eyewear manufacturer credited with brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley, for its hi-tech wearable gadget, Glass.
The partnership with Luxottica is set to take Google
Glass to a new level altogether, as it would help the search giant to design
and produce an exclusive collection of eyeglass frames that incorporate the
technology.
According to The Verge, the deal would be limited to the US market and
focus on Ray-Ban and Oakley.
Luxottica revealed that the first collection would
combine high-end technology with avant-garde design offering the best in style,
quality, and performance.
Meanwhile, Google stated in its post that the deal
doesn't mean that consumers would be able to see Glass on their Oakleys or
Ray-Bans tomorrow, but the deal marks the start of a new chapter in Glass's
design.
Recently, Google rolled out first Google Glass frames
that could take prescription lenses, apart from offering some frames that were
high on designs and styles.
As per a Wall Street Journal report, Luxottica is not
only the single largest eyewear manufacturer with 12.4 percent marketshare, but
it also controls LensCrafters and Sunglass Hut, which would allow it to sell
Google Glass in over 5,000 retail stores, the report added.
The internet-connected eyewear would be made available to
general public in the coming months for a price estimated at $1,500.
